Blog to discuss and post recent updates on biohydrogen production technologies worldwide
Saturday, November 6, 2010
The huge demand of fuels worldwide and lesser availability of fossil fuel have created great interest in research on alternative fuel production. Biofuels are now considered to be the best alternative fuels replacing non-renewable fossil fuels. Among the several biofuels like biomethane, bioethanol and biohydrogen, biohydrogen is considered to be the most attractive future energy due to its higher conversion efficiency to usable power, low generation of pollutants and high energy density. There are a variety of technologies for biohydrogen production such as dark fermentation, photofermentation and biophotolysis of water using algae and cyanobacteria. While biohydrogen production through dark fermentation involves a simpler technology as compared to the other two photo-based technologies, it leads to low yield of biohydrogen along with large quantities of side products. There are many hurdles to the practical application of the developed technologies and research. Moreover, low production rate and low yields impede the implementation of the developed technologies. I have created this blog to discuss current issues, research and latest developments on biohydrogen as the future energy. I welcome all those who are interested in biohydrogen to participate in the discussion to share our knowledge and troubleshoot problems in technology breakthrough.
